I found the trailers for this show to be HILARIOUS and I was really excited about watching it when it aired last night.
It's a remake from a Columbian series called "Yo Soy Betty La Fea" transposed into an American setting and produced by Selma Hayek (who makes appearances in a telenovela that the Suarez family watches nightly). Betty is a homely girl who scored a job in hoighty toighty fashion magazine with a womanizing boss and shallow coworkers who are obsessed with looks. What Betty lacks in grace and beauty she makes up for in brains and in spirit. I found this show both funny and touching. Though it bases in a few stereotypes (struggling Latino family from Queens and rich white boy with his own 'problems' about proving himself to his father)it does make a statement about inner beauty and getting what you want with your brains. You can't help but feeling a huge sense of empathy for the character. She's great! Watch Ugly Betty next Thursday at 8.
