To take my latin fever up just a notch higher, I went out to Lula Lounge with C. She lent me this bright turquoise escandalosa dress with lots of flippy layers that was PERFECT for salsa dancing.
Lula was little hidden surprise in the middle of the ghetto on Dundas and Dufferin. The window was wide open pouring the glow of soft yellow light and kicking brazillian congo drum beats onto the sidewalk. The bouncer was really friendly, and was dancing in the doorway by himself. A $10 cover provided us with a live band and a vibrant dance floor with professional dancers whipping their hair and twrirling around the room. Either side of the dancefloor had tables with candels from which to view the dancing frenzy. The 30-something crowd were nicely dressed, friendly and unpretentious. A few guys asked us to dance, and they were there to do just that and nothing more. They made a salsa dancer out of me and though I warned them that I was only a novice, they whipped me around the dance floor and before I knew it i was twirling and being thrown around to the beat of the drums and trumpets. THose guys can move, and were really willing to teach us some dance steps. C and I had so much fun.
The bartenders were really attentive and served me mojitos as strong as the ones in Cuba. 3/4 full of tequila with a splash of soda, mint leaves, sugar and lime in a highball. Sooooooooo good. Good but expensive at almost $10 a drink.
This place was a little advanced for us in terms of dance, but it was fun anyway, we'll be back once we brush up on our salsa steps for sure. But until then, I guess Plaza Flamingo is more my speed.
And now it's just a matter of convincing sharl to come to class with me.
